Homemade Cat Food - 5 Tips for Making Cat Food at Home

There are many benefits that come with preparing your cats food at home.  Knowing exactly what your cat is consuming gives peace of mind and reassurance they're getting what they need to maintain optimal health.  Here are 5 tips for making homemade cat food.

1.  Balancing the diet is the most important factor.
If the diet is not balanced, it becomes less than ideal and can ultimately lead to many nutritional deficiencies.  If there are no vitamins or minerals (especially calcium) in the diet, cats run into deficiencies quite quickly.  Especially in kittens, it can happen in just a few months.  This is a big reason why vets are against homemade meals, they are the ones who see all the deficiencies.

2.  Meat Selection:  Choosing meat that your cat will like can sometimes be a tricky task.  If your cat is new to a raw meat diet, it may take sometime before they will fully accept it.  Poultry is generally more accepted by cats, ground or chopped.  Other meats to try, include: beef, lamb, pork, venison, rabbit, ostrich, etc.  The meat must be fresh and fit for human consumption.

3.  Fruits & Vegetables:  The cat is an obligate carnivore and thrives on a raw or cooked meat based diet.  They do not have any need for fruits and vegetables.

4.  Avoid Feeding Carbohydrates (corn, wheat, rice & potatoes):  Cats don't metabolize these foods very well and carbohydrates can put a strain on the liver and pancreas.  Feeding carbohydrates (especially when included in dry cat food) for an extended period of time can be the cause of many feline diseases.  Including inflammatory bowel disease, allergies, struvite crystals, oxalate stones, lower urinary tract infection, kidney disease & obesity.

5.  Have fun and enjoy the results!  Play around and see which meats your cat likes best.
