Diabetes develops because the animal's body is unable to break down and use glucose properly. Sugar appears in the urine, which causes the animal to urinate more, causing him to drink more fluids. Carbohydrates turn to sugar in the digestive tract, and our canine friends do not have the capacity to deal with this amount of sugar.

The wolf, with it's wild prey diet, does not suffer the consequences of the grain-based diet. As long as prey animals are abundant, the wolf will maintain a healthy weight, and will not develop the symptoms, so prevalent in our pet population.
